Rae L Kohn, 93, of Medford, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Aspirus Medford Hospital.
A funeral mass for Rae will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Father Patrick McConnell officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00. Military Rites will be performed by the Medford Area Military Honors Team.
Rae was born March 28,1930, to John and Kathryn (Bauman) Kohn. He grew up on the family farm in the town of Little Black.
Rae joined the National Guard at the age of 17. When the Korean War broke out he enlisted in the Army and volunteered for the infantry. He served in the Army from Januray 1952 to January 1955. During his service, Rae spent 13 months in Korea, where he served part of that time on Heartbreak Ridge.
Rae married Florette Hutman of Withee WI, February 27, 1954. After his time in the service, Rae brought his family home to Medford to take over operation of the family dairy farm.
Rae also had a passion for beekeeping, gardening and deer hunting - harvesting his last deer at the age of 92.
Rae proudly served on the Medford Military Honors Team. He said it was the last thing that could be done to honor a veteran for their service. He was involved in many other community organizations. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Korean War Veterans Association, Farm Bureau, Taylor County Beekeepers Association, Wisconsin Honey Producers Association, 4-H, and Manitowoc Milk Producers. He was the chairman of the committee to build the Korean War Memorial at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park, Neillsville, WI.
Rae is survived by his children, Michael Kohn of Medford, Donna Schneider of Vancouver, Washington, Linda Sebastian of Richmond, KY, Mark Kohn of Medford, David (Jaymi) Kohn of Medford, Lorie Floyd of Medford, Gary (Lisa) Kohn of Medford, Mary (Terry Thurman) Kohn of Medford, Neal Kohn of Medford, 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Josephine Kohn of Marshfield; siblings, Mary Hansen of Greenfield, Barb Pinter of Abbotsford, Donny (Elaine) Kohn of Withee, Jane Sackmann of Leesburg, FL, and John Kohn of Holcombe. Rae is further survived by many other family and friends.
Rae was preceded in death by his parents, wife Florette, son Bruce Kohn, and sisters Marcella Writz and Judy Holtz.
