Michael B. Selby, age 80, departed this life peacefully on April 23, 2025, in the loving arms of his family. He grew up in the Medford area and attended Wayside School before graduating from Medford Senior High School. His life was marked by faith, family, friendship, and a deep connection to community.
Mike proudly served as a sergeant in the 724th Engineer Battalion, Wisconsin Army National Guard, serving six years in Medford. In 1971, Mike completed an apprenticeship and became a commercial journeyman electrician. Over the course of 41 years, he built a career based on technical excellence, diligence, and dedication – taking pride in doing things the right way.
In addition to his electrical work, Mike farmed for 15 years in the Town of Grover with his former spouse, Donna Nelson, and raised three daughters, Gena, Leslie, and Polly. Mike loved outdoor activities and competitive sports. He enjoyed league horseshoes, bowling, softball, and basketball. He fondly reflected on time spent with friends and family playing cards, fishing, deer hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, and having coffee with "the guys." In later years, he was blessed with the companionship of his special friend, Betty Danen, whose presence brought joy and comfort to his life.
Mike studied and grew in Christian faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Medford, Wisconsin. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and led him to serve his local community and overseas. Mike had a passion for mission work and made six life-changing trips to Israel.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Lillian Selby, and his sister, Laurel Campbell. He is survived by his daughters, Gena Selby (Robert Haglund), Leslie Selby (friend Ross Nesheim), and Polly (Matthew) Bray; his grandchildren, Katerina, Jaylee, Thomas, Danee, and Cash; his sister, Yvonne (Lyle) Schwarz; and his brother-in-law, Richard (Laurel) Campbell, along with many dear friends and extended family.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Michael’s life at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at First Baptist Church, Medford with Rev. Kim Swenson officiating. Michael was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Holway, and will lay at rest in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place at First Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM.
Memorials are appreciated and may go to Hope Hospice, Medford and/or Medford VFW building project.
Though he has left this world, Michael’s spirit remains ever present in the hearts of those who knew him.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
