Rom received his MD degree from Far Eastern University Medical School in Manila, Philippines in 1962. Seeking a better life for his wife and young child, he immigrated to the United States and completed a surgical internship at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee Wisconsin and a surgical residency and chief resident year at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He then spent a year as a surgeon providing care to the underserved population of Welch, West Virginia.
In 1971, Rom and his family settled in Medford, WI, where he was a dedicated general surgeon for 35 years at Memorial Hospital and the Medford Clinic. Rom’s true passion was golf. He frequently played at Tee Hi, Black River Country Club, Voyager Village, and Citrus Hills Country Club, built club sets for himself and others, and occasionally attended PGA tournaments. Even in his final months, he enjoyed watching the PGA with loved ones.
