Darrell J. “Yogi” Peissig, 79, of Colby, formerly of Dorchester and Fond du Lac, died Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Colonial Health and Rehab in Colby while under the care of St. Croix Hospice.
He was born September 25, 1945 in Owen to Clifford and Ramona (Bessette) Peissig. He graduated from Dorchester Abby High School in 1964.
Following high school, Yogi entered the U.S. Army and served as an MP in Germany during the Vietnam War from 1965 until his honorable discharge in 1967.
He then worked for Harvey Company and Soo Line Railroad.
On April 13, 1977, he married Mary Swiggum in Fond du Lac, where they also resided. Yogi worked for Saputo Cheese Factory until his retirement in 2008. Mary preceded him in death in 2014, and Yogi moved to Medford in 2015 to be near family.
He enjoyed beekeeping, sturgeon spearing, deer hunting, and helping on the family farm. Over the years, he had many cats and he loved them all dearly.
He is survived by his three children, Barry Peissig of Medford, Kris (Dave) Kaczmarek of Medford, Joe (April) Peissig of Two Rivers; siblings, Kim (Carla) Peissig of Dorchester, Larry (Kathy) Peissig of Pewaukee, Jackie Robinson of Dorchester; eight grandchildren, Zackery (Sydney) Kayhart, David Peissig, Dakota Peissig, Jodan (Ali) Kayhart, Dustin (Sheree) Peissig, Brent (Darion) Kayhart, Cora Erdman (Will Hammock), Courtney Kayhart; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; stepson, Jay Erdman; brother, Del Peissig; sister-in-law, Mary Peissig; and daughter-in-law, Deb Peissig.
A celebration of Yogi’s life will be held at a later date with burial at Stetsonville Public Cemetery and military rites provided by the Medford Area Military Honors Team.
